Valuable tips for proper lighting
In our interview with Jörg Schlicker, team leader of Technical Order Processing at domovari, we would like to explain some important aspects of mirror cabinet lighting: from the importance of colour temperature to special technologies such as tunable white and the diverse control options. Learn how our bespoke mirror cabinets not only ensure optimal lighting conditions, but also offer maximum comfort and flexibility.
What technical aspects should be considered when lighting a bathroom, especially with regard to brightness and colour temperature?
“When dealing with the topic of lighting, you will come across terms such as lumen or kelvin. The lumen value provides information about the brightness of a light source – comparable to the wattage that used to provide information about the brightness of a light bulb. However, the colour temperature or light colour, measured in kelvin (K), is also decisive for the effect of the room. The lower the kelvin value, the “warmer” the light. At 2000 K, it is warm, reddish light, comparable to the sunset, and at 6000 K, it is a cooler, white light, similar to daylight.
In order to implement the individual wishes of the end customer in the best possible way, it is therefore important that our customers specify the desired light colour when ordering.“
Which brightness and which light colour are suitable for the bathroom?
“When choosing the ideal light colour and brightness, there are a few points to consider. A distinction is made between basic lighting, which illuminates a room evenly, and supplementary additional lighting. The size of the room and the colour of the furnishings also play an important role. With dark furnishings, you should choose slightly higher values, as the light is more strongly attenuated. Light furniture and white walls require correspondingly lower values.
A combination of a ceiling light as basic lighting and mirror lights as an additional light source is recommended. For activities such as applying make-up or shaving, a brighter light with approximately 4000-6000 Kelvin is suitable. To create a cozy atmosphere, a slightly warmer light colour can be chosen for the indirect lighting. Experience shows that 3000 K is a good average value, which we install most frequently. However, it always depends on the lighting design of the room. “
The domovari product range includes a “tunable white” option. Can you briefly explain what this is all about?
„Tunable white is a technology that makes it possible to flexibly adjust the colour temperature of the light. In contrast to fixed light colours, tunable white allows you to vary the colour temperature from warm light (2200 K) to cooler, white light (5000 K). This offers the advantage that the light can be adjusted as needed for different activities and moods. Fixed light colors, on the other hand, provide constant lighting, which offers reliable and unchanged light quality in certain applications. “
What advantages do illuminated mirrors and mirror cabinets offer compared to conventional models?
“Mirrors and mirror cabinets with LED lighting offer an even and glare-free light, which is particularly advantageous when applying make-up and shaving. The integration of the lighting into the mirror is space-saving and makes the bathroom look more modern and tidy. Many models also offer dimmable lighting and adjustable colour temperatures, allowing the lighting conditions to be adjusted as required. Under certain circumstances, an illuminated mirror cabinet can even serve as the main light source in the bathroom. “
What lighting options are available for domovari mirror cabinets?
“We offer various lighting options for our mirror cabinets, which are tailored to different needs and room situations.
For the MIRR2 mirror cabinet, for example, you can choose between HE1 and HE2 lighting. The HE1 version has a protruding roof with a flush-mounted LED light band that shines directly downwards – ideal for installation or if stronger light is desired downwards. The HE2 version has an illuminated plexiglas roof that shines forward and distributes the light all around. In small bathrooms with a large mirror cabinet, this lighting can even serve as the main light source.
Our MIRR5 LUNA can optionally be backlit with LEDs. This creates ambient lighting that emphasizes the special design of the round mirror cabinet and skillfully sets the scene. The MIRR6 FRAME is equipped with a surrounding LED profile in the mirror, which enables both direct and indirect lighting and thus ensures optimal lighting conditions.
In addition, LED strips can be integrated into all our mirror cabinets for ambient lighting, which radiate upwards or downwards and create a pleasant atmosphere.“
What options are there for controlling the lighting in the mirror cabinet?
„The lighting of our mirror cabinets can be controlled in various ways. Either via an on-site switch in the room, an integrated switch/button directly in the mirror cabinet, a DALI module for integration into smart home systems or a remote control. All these control options are also optionally available with a dimming function. For the flexible control of tunable white, we also offer our ‘TuneTouch’ control panel. This allows the brightness and colour temperature of the light to be adjusted precisely. If additional ambient lighting is available, it can also be decided whether it should be controlled together with the mirror cabinet light or separately.
Each control method has its specific advantages and can be selected according to the needs and preferences of the end customers. In addition to our standards, we naturally also check the feasibility of individual customer requests. “
